Formulating Your Own Feed/ Figuring Protein Percentage

Below is a sample recipe for an example of how to formulate your feed for the proper protein percentage. It took me A LOT of tries to finally reach the desired protein percentage for this recipe (my previous chick starter recipe, I no longer use corn and I add the flax after the other grains are ground), so don't be surprised if it takes a while to figure it out for your recipe also! You will have to adjust the "parts" of each until you reach the protein you are looking for. I do not use any soy for my animals, so it takes more field peas to reach the desired protein percentage.

2 Parts                4.76lbs            CORN                9% protein                     2x9=18
4 Parts                9.52lbs            WHEAT              11.9% protein               4x11.9=47.6
1 Part*                2.38lbs            BARLEY             12.5% protein               1x12.5=12.5
1 Part*                2.38lbs            OATS                13% protein                   1x13=13
12 Parts**           28.57lbs           PEAS                 22.8% protein              12x22.8=273.6
1 Part***            2.38lbs             FLAX                 37% protein                   1x37=37

Figuring out protein percentages:
Take the protein percentage of each grain and multiply it by the number of parts of that grain in the total mix. (ex for wheat: 4 parts times 11.9 equals 47.6)
Add all of those numbers together.
Divide by the total number of parts of all grains in the mix.

Protein source(peas): 273.6
Other grains:           +128.1
                                401.7
Divided by total parts of grain(401.7/21)= 19.1 (% protein per part (pound) of grain)
