The herd at Ivory Oak is made up of purebred Nubians and French Alpines. Our foundation stock consists of high quality, registered breeding stock.
Our goats are raised as holistically and sustainably as possible. They are given free choice alfalfa and free choice pasture spring through fall. They are supplemented with a grain ration consisting of certified organic barley, oats, and peas. They do not ever receive any corn, soy, or wheat. Conventional medication is used only in more of an emergency setting.
The last year has brought changes to the way we are doing business. Despite the herd size being cut in half to only include the bare minimum of our breeding stock lines and taking a break from kidding season this year, we remain over capacity.
Options that are being considered include:
- Selling the Nubian herd and only moving forward with the Alpine herd. All Nubian dam lines would be required to be sold and stay together; they are bonded family units.
- Selling the entire herd to a farm that wants to become a sub-contractor, raising our goats in a specific (organic, sustainable) manner so we can buy the milk for the Ivory Oak products.
- Finding a partner farm that wants to move either the Nubian herd or both breeds to their property and become the primary caretaker of the herd while we support their care financially & in exchange for milk, still following similar sub-contracting with raising the goats in a specific (organic, sustainable) manner.
